DT Mike Williams officially announces plans to opt out of 2020 season

Throughout the week, there had been word that SMU graduate transfer defensive tackle Mike Williams was considering opting out of the 2020 season amid coronavirus concerns. Friday evening, Williams made his decision official with a social media post.

"SMU has been the standard for how college football programs should protect and take care of their players throughout the pandemic," Williams tweeted. "After many talks with my family and nights of prayer, I have decided it would not be in my best interest to participate this season."

Williams added that he'll still be at SMU taking graduate school courses, and he plans to rejoin the team for the 2021 sesaon. Williams came to SMU after a solid career in the Pac-12 at Stanford.
