There are few better feelings for college football walk-ons than to hear their hard work parlays into scholarships.
SMU defensive tackle Will Jones, running back Tyler Lavine and long snapper Cole Voyles all received the news from head coach Sonny Dykes that they were officially scholarship players during a team meeting. The news and reaction were captured by SMU football's social media team.
"One of my favorite things to get to do is to see that for three guys who deserve it and put in a lot of work," Dykes said in the video.
Jones, a 6-1, 300-pound tackle who had experience playing at Baylor, had a fumble recovery in the first game of the year against Arkansas State. Voyles, a 6-0, 186-pounder, just finished his freshman year and had a fumble recovery and a tackle, in addition to being vital on special teams.
Lavine, a 5-11, 220-pounder who also finished his freshman year, rushed for a touchdown at South Florida. He rushed for 26 yards on three carries and also caught a pass and returned a kickoff in the Boca Raton Bowl.
