Hoops: Jordan Tolbert named American Conference Player of the Week

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (SMU/AAC) -- SMU’s Jordan Tolbert was named the American Athletic Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week on Monday. Tolbert had 23 points and nine rebounds while shooting 11-of-12 from the floor as No. 19 SMU improved to 7-0 with an 82-58 win against Michigan (recap) on Dec. 8.

Tolbert, a senior from Fort Worth, is averaging 12.3 points and 8.1 rebounds in his first season with the Mustangs. He is hitting 64.3 percent from the field on the season. He also has 10 assists, six steals and four blocked shots through seven games.

The Mustangs play the first two games of the Continental Tire Las Vegas Classic this week. SMU hosts Nicholls (3-4) on Wednesday at 7 p.m. and Hampton (4-3) on Thursday at 6 p.m. The Mustangs are 5-0 at home this season and 39-3 at home since the start of the 2013-14 season.

Tolbert joins the list of award winners on the SMU roster. Nic Moore was tabbed to repeat as AAC Player of the Year, while he and Markus Kennedy were unanimously selected to the preseason All-AAC first team. Moore was also named to the Wooden Award Preseason Top 50 for the second straight year and to the Naismith Award Watch List for the first time. Kennedy is on the Karl Malone Award Watch List. Semi Ojeleye is a nominee for the Allstate NABC Good Works Team. Shake Milton was selected the AAC Rookie of the Week on Nov. 16 and Nic Moore was named to the AAC Weekly Honor Roll on Dec. 7.
