PonyLawExpress: Adam, basketball questions, any update on recruiting finishing out the 2016 class?
It looks like SMU is in a bit of a waiting period to see if Ted Kapita or Bruno Fernando get eligible in time to sign this spring. If neither of those options come to fruition, that's when I'd expect SMU to become a player for a grad transfer like possibly R.J. White.
BenMeyer06: How have the staff and other commits reacted to David Moore's decommitment? What QBs are we targeting in 2017?
I think the staff and the other commits have been pretty clear in their social media posts since Moore decommitted. Demerick Gary tweeted that he hopes Memphis has a good offensive line while I don't think it's any coincidence that Chad Morris and his staff are perpetually tweeting about the "Texas Tough" 2016 class when the two out-of-state commits, Moore and Dae Williams, both decommitted. I took that as a veiled shot at both Moore and Williams.
As for 2017 targets, Jason Shelley, Jaylon Mascorro and Avery Davis are the top-rated QBs with SMU offers that are uncommitted at this point. Don't think SMU could go wrong any of them, all are dual-threat and equally dangerous throwing the ball and on their feet. Charlie Brewer is an interesting pro-style QB that SMU could look at as well for 2017.
PonySnob: Any word on if any of the existing players who know that they have been recruited over, will be looking to transfer?
Prescott Line was the first to escort him out the door and I'm sure there will be a couple others but overall I'd be surprised if there is a mass exodus. Frankly, most of the guys that are being recruited over don't have many options to transfer and would be better off finishing up their degrees at SMU. If there are more transfers, I think it will likely happen after spring practice when these guys realize that they are behind 2015 redshirts on the depth chart.
Dsmith25: When does the AAC announce the 2016 football schedule?
In the past football schedules have been announced in March.
Peruna08: Who from StangGang16 do you think will redshirt? start? What's the "way too early" starting line up look like?
I'll withhold judgement on a way-too-early starting lineup until I've seen spring practices. I'd guess Braxton Webb, Ryan Becker, Collin Rock, Myles Duke, Ke'mon Freeman, Joshua Shelmire and Blake Carlisle are safe bets to redshirt in 2016. But overall Chad Morris wants to play more of the young kids in an attempt to stop the losing this year so I think a large chunk of the 2016 class will play this next season.
Dsmith25: An overview of the basketball scholarship situation. We know that the team lost 9 scholarships over 3 years, and that we are appealing that. Is there an expected timeframe to hear back from the NCAA on the appeal? Did we get credit for any of the 9 lost scholarships this year, or is that part of the appeal? If we get credit for a couple this year + get a couple back via appeal, we should be full speed by the '18-'19 season i'm guessing?
SMU did get credit for two scholarships already against the nine, so it is currently staring at being down seven scholarships across three seasons. But as you mentioned, SMU is appealing those scholarships now. The appeal could stretch into March or April, or even longer. I think SMU has a very good chance to get a couple schollys back considering SMU accepted Larry Brown's suspension and the postseason ban without appeal and self-reported the violations. If Syracuse got scholarships back, SMU certainly will.
As for when that means SMU will be back to full scholarships, that all just depends on how SMU wants to play things. Yes, SMU could swallow five scholarships over two years and be ready to go for 2018-19, but SMU could decide to go 2-2-1 and then would still be one scholarship down for 2018-19. All depends how Larry and staff want to use the scholarships at that point, but considering how loaded Texas is in the 2018 recruiting class, it might be in SMU's best interest to get the scholarships out of the way in hopes of pulling in a number of top prospects.
PonyLawExpress: Just from what you think or have heard who are our top 3 2017 basketball recruiting targets, on our board, that are legit considering us?
Keller combo guard R.J. Nembhard, Oklahoma point guard Trae Young, Prime Prep power forward Robert Brown. These are the three best prospects that as far as I know are legitimately considering SMU. Of the three, Young is far and away the best prospect and kept SMU in his top schools when he cut down earlier this season.
