I was going to write a column, but I would rather keep this in house. In short, I don't think Jank is the guy. His recruiting is lacking and he's not developing talent. He's relying too much on transfers and those transfers aren't meshing together well. His teams play sloppy and he doesn't make in-game adjustments. He makes excuse after excuse about how he doesn't have enough practice bodies (easy to fix, just ask for practice players around campus).
Lipscomb played sharp and outdid SMU's talent with how well it was coached. They only made three mid-range jumpers. The rest came around the basket. I took away two things from that. First, SMU lacks a big body on the inside, and desperately needs one. Chargois isn't the guy, he's too much of a stretch player. Jank's position-less approach just lacks in this regard. Second, SMU's players weren't staying with guys off of the cut. That underscores the lack of discipline on the defensive side of the basketball.
Will he get fired after the season? I don't know. He can always make excuses and say it was because Jarrey was hurt. But I think if he doesn't make the NIT and win at least 20 games, his job is in jeopardy. SMU has hung its hat on a solid basketball program and I don't think it'll tolerate a program that's underperforming and a coach that's at fault for that.
