Eric Dickerson, a recent inductee to the Cotton Bowl Hall of Fame, joined the Dennis and Friedo Show on KESN-FM 103.3 ESPN Radio last week to talk about SMU, the Rams and more. Here are some of the highlights:
SMU's chances to be relevant again:
Dickerson: It's so frustrating to watch. Let me start of by saying this. I've been very critical of my school, the football program. But know this: I love my school. And I don't say it just to say it to try to be mean, I just tell the truth. And sometimes the truth is not popular. It's the truth. You have to go out and do the things that other schools do. Look at other schools around. I look at TCU. TCU used to be our doormat. North Texas State[sic]. Another doormat. Baylor. Eh, they were ok. But now these schools have turned their football programs totally around. Stanford was never a football school. Standford is still an academic school, but it's a football powerhouse.
If they can do it, we can do it. I talked to coach Chad
Morris on Wednesday. Great guy, I really like him a lot. I'm really pulling for him. I just hope that the administration does what they're supposed to do to support them. That's what it comes down to. When you think about college football and who runs the schools, basically, it's all these egos involved. But when you think about it, the big schools, Ohio State, Texas, A&M, Alabama, people know the head coaches. They don't know the president. That's what it comes down to. They don't know who the president is, I know the head coach. When I was at SMU, it was all about football. Academics was most definitely the most important, but still. It's just frustrating.
On TCU:
Dickerson: It kills me! They're right down... I'm like the Horned Frogs?? We used to make fun of them. I'm like that ugly Horned Frog, the ugly colors they have. But I've got to give them credit, they've done a great job of recruiting, they've turned that program around. They've got the right coach. But I'll say it again, it takes the administration to get behind the coach. It just can't be the coach. The coach can't do it by himself. He's got to recruit. But you've got to have people behind you that support you. Everybody has to be on the same page. If everybody's not on the same page, it's not going to work. full interview
