McNeese State vs SMU

There was never any question, it was over before it started, stick a fork in them. Any of these expressions would do for the dismantling that SMU handed down to the McNeese State Cowboys on Wednesday night.

To be very clear from the beginning of this recap, McNeese State is not a good basketball team. In fact if it wasn’t for a hot hand from Kalob Ledoux, who hit three three-pointers in the first half, the Cowboys would have been down even more than they already were as they headed into the intermission in a 48-23 hole. Semi Ojeleye scored the first nine points for SMU as they jumped out to an early lead, the defense took over from there forcing seven first half turnovers and limiting the Cowboys to an abysmal 7-30 shooting from the field, and then a huge scoring effort from pretty much everyone put the Ponies up for good.

Shake Milton was a complete assassin with his shooting as the sophomore was hitting from everywhere, he finished with 17 points on 6-10 attempts and hit 4-5 three-pointers. His passing really helped to get his teammates rolling too as Sterling Brown had a great game with 10 points, 10 rebounds and six assists. Senior Ben Moore finished with an impressive stat line as the big man went for 14 points and eight rebounds, but it was the offensive rebounding of Jarrey Foster that surprised most everyone. The sophomore guard finished with 14 points and nine rebounds, seven of which were second chance boards.

After the loss of the transferring Harry Froling, and needing some changes to be made to the rotations, Jankovich looked to his bench for answers. Freshman Tom Wilson and Dashawn McDowell were called to action and the two played well in a reserved role. McDowell easily had his best game of the season as the Oklahoma native scored seven points and got to the free throw line four times.

Defensively SMU dominated the Cowboys in almost every way possible. McNeese State was 19-62 shooting the ball and were guilty of 11 turnovers. They also lost the rebounding battle 51-31 to the Mustangs.

Not exactly a statement win but the Mustangs add another victim to the list of names that have fallen at Moody Coliseum as they claim their eighth win of the year.
