Terms of Lashlee’s contract were not disclosed, as SMU is a private institution. In November 2023, he also received a multiyear extension to ensure he remains on the Hilltop for years to come, according to athletic director Rick Hart. Under Lashlee’s leadership, SMU is 18-2 in its last 20 games and has made the transition from the AAC to the ACC look seamless. The only loss this season came in early September against BYU in a close 18-15 game.

The Mustangs are entering a new era with a fresh coach and numerous new players. They kick off their season on November 4 against Tarleton, with their ACC opener also set for Moody Coliseum.

SMU has prioritized South Carolina linebacker transfer Bangally Kamara. According to sources, SMU offered him and the coaches have been in constant contact with Kamara. A visit is in the works. Illinois is in mix for Kamara and a number of other teams have shown interest including Arizona, Indiana, Syracuse, Michigan State, Cal, Florida State, Miami, Kansas State, Miami, and Virginia Tech.
