NFL Draft commentary (part 2): Where a few other Mustangs fall

On Tuesday, we looked at where both Shane Buechele and Kylen Granson were being mocked in the upcoming NFL Draft. Using ultra-sophisticated methodologies and highly scientific formulations, we came up with some decent guesses. Now we get into the harder part: Figuring the potential landing spots for the other SMU players.

FB Recruiting SMU after spring: 10 players to watch during summer workouts

While spring ball continues, there are a few athletes itching for the opportunity to gain their respect with the program. They are SMU signees who, for whatever reason, cannot join the team until summer workouts. Here are 10 athletes to keep an eye on for summer enrollment. All names are listed in alphabetical order.

FB Recruiting SMU football two-day megacamp now with 50 contributing teams

SMU will host the Dallas Showcase, a two-day, two-session camp that will take place June 5 and 6. The event originally featured SMU teaming up with nine other colleges -- USC, Miami, Oklahoma, Ohio State, Oregon, UTSA, Utah State, UTEP and Rice.
That camp now has gone from nine other teams to 34. SMU announced Monday afternoon that 15 new teams were added to an already-growing event.

What we're hearing: Quick hits from spring practice

Here are a few notes we at The HillTopics were able to compile following SMU's first day of spring football practice.

Numbers game
Head coach Sonny Dykes said there were 123 players out for Day 1 of practice. That's a big deal, and it shows the team has plenty of depth at all the positions.
Obviously, SMU has tons of offensive linemen, and many of them will be competing for two-deep spots. But one position that seems to have a huge number is linebacker.
And speaking of linebacker ...

Same guy, new position
Keke Burns has been moved from wide receiver to outside linebacker. He's bulked up and now is pushing 205 pounds, and he could be a coverage backer/safety hybrid in SMU's defense.
Making tackles won't be new for Burns. In high schools, he had 57 tackles and an interception at Class 4A Pittsburg.

Quick update on Roberson, McDaniel
We've reported that wide receiver Reggie Roberson Jr. and running back TJ McDaniel won't participate in spring football this season. Roberson is still recovering from a knee injury, and McDaniel is still recovering from an ankle injury -- both occuring against Memphis last October.
The good news is that both Roberson and McDaniel are "progressing nicely" and should be ready to go in time for the summer.

Jersey wars?
True freshman quarterback Preston Stone expected to wear No. 2 upon his arrival to SMU. Walk-on quarterback Josh Stupin wore No. 2 last year.
Something had to give, right?
The result: Stone will keep No. 2, while Stupin will wear No. 14 this season.
Take that for whatever it's worth.

SMU football: 5 rising players to watch

Fresh after SMU's first scrimmage -- and its first open practice to fans and recruits -- here are a few names to watch who some may consider under-the-radar players.

WR Dylan Goffney
Head coach Sonny Dykes knew what he had in Goffney, a 2021 signee who has shown plenty of playmaker ability at wide receiver already. Goffney was effective during Saturday's scrimmage, and he's making a case for not only breaking the two-deep depth chart but also potentially finding a way into getting starter's minutes soon.

DB Bryce McMorris
Another true freshman and early enrollee on SMU roster, McMorris has been very good in the secondary, and he showed his ability to make plays Saturday. McMorris is listed as a safety but has true secondary skills to where he's a reliable coverage back. A starting safety spot is still wide open, and McMorris is in the running.

RB Orlando Jones
Here's a name we don't hear much when discussing SMU running backs, but also a player who refuses to go away when those discussions happen. A bowling ball in the backfield at 5-9, 240 pounds, Jones moves very well and has made a few highlight runs during spring practices. The highlights continued Saturday when he broke free for another long touchdown run.

LB Keke Burns
Burns has transitioned quite well from the offensive side -- where he was buried in the wide receiver depth chart -- to the defensive side -- where he is in the running for a starting spot at linebacker. At 6-3 and 202 pounds, Burns looks the part of an outside linebacker/safety hybrid.

WR Calvin Wiggins
SMU has a lot of speed at wide receivers, but Wiggins brings a different dynamic to the group. At 6-4, he is the tallest wide receiver on the roster. At nearly 200 pounds, he's a big target who also has a second gear to escape defenders. Could 2021 be Wiggins' breakout year?

SMU spring football: 5 things to watch in Saturday's open practice

SMU will continue its spring football schedule with an open practice Saturday morning. The practice will take place at 11 a.m. at Gerald J. Ford Stadium, and all fans, recruits and everyone in between are welcomed to attend.

Here are five things to keep an eye on with Saturday's practice:

Quarterback battle
The battle to replace Shane Buechele at quarterback is extremely competitive. Derek Green is the incumbent, but Oklahoma transfer Tanner Mordecai and true freshman Preston Stone have made this a battle that will come down to the final practices.
How the three quarterbacks perform with a crowd could sway the votes, as head coach Sonny Dykes and offensive coordinator Garrett Riley continue to monitor the offense.

Offensive line movement
We've seen a lot of mix and match with the offensive line -- which is a luxury. Hayden Howerton, last year's starting guard, has seen plenty of time at center. Alan Ali, last year's starting center, is playing on the interior line.
Guard Justin Osborne and tackles Jaylon Thomas and Beau Morris were last year's starters, but there are several young linemen looking to bump the veterans from the starting spots -- or, at least, find their way into the two-deep rotation. Keep an eye on center Branson Hickman and tackle Marcus Bryant, just to name a couple.

WR vs. DB play
SMU hopes to thrive off its offense in 2021, which means quarterback-to-receiver chemistry must be at a high. So far, all three quarterbacks have been in sync with a talented receiver crew led by Danny Gray and Rashee Rice.
That said, the secondary is looking to make plays against arguably the AAC's most talented receiver group -- on paper, if nothing else. Ar'mani Johnson, Brandon Crossley and Chevin Calloway are three defensive backs hoping to put on a show with a crowd watching.

Talented transfers shining
Tight end Grant Calcaterra was expected to be a major catalyst the minute he announced he'd be transferring from Oklahoma. He's yet to disappoint so far. Calcaterra will be one of a couple transfers to watch Saturday.
Arizona State transfer wide receiver Jordan Kerley is among the most athletic players on the team, and Saturday could be an opportunity for him to have a breakout day. Kerley could be a player who not only sees time at receiver but also ultimately gets a shot to excel as a special teams returner.

DL: Who steps up?
New defensive line coach Chidera Uzo-Diribe is using every practice to see which member in his group wants to take full leadership role. He's looking for playmakers in the trenches, and he's got a lot of players to consider.
Mike Williams, Junior Aho, Will Jones, Elijah Chatman, Harrison Loveless, Terrence Newman and DeVere Levelston all are among the interior players who can be impact players in 2021. Be on the lookout for Toby Ndukwe, Gary Wiley and Nelson Paul at defensive end.
Turner Coxe is one of SMU's most experienced defenders, and on the digital roster, he's listed as a defensive end. But with SMU's new 3-4 look, don't be surprised if he's more of an outside linebacker in 2021.
